Itinerary
Day 1 :
Arrive in Tanzania (elevation 800m)
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day
Day 2 :
Drive to Rongai Gate 2364m– Hike to Simba Camp 2750m
Drive to Rongai gate to start trek on path forest initially to reach the edge of the moorland where the camp is with beautiful views over the Kenyan plains.
Day 3 :
Simba Camp 2750 – Kikelewa Camp 3600m.
Steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo summit and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Continue across moorland towards Mawenzi Peak. The camp is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios nearby.
Day 4 :
Kikelewa Camp 3600 – Mawenzi Tarn 4315m.
Initial short climb and superb views of the mountain and a few hours to the tarn which is in a cirque directly beneath Mawenzi. Short hike, and rest day in the afternoon. Camp here for two nights.
Day 5 :
Acclimatisation day with a hike up and around Mawenzi.
Day 6 :
Mawenzi Tarn 4315m – Kibo Hut.4720m 9 kms.
Crossing the high desert terrain of the saddle between Kibo peak and Mawenzi peak, the final camp is at Kibo campsite beneath the massif itself. Rest in preparation for summit day.
Day 7 :
Kibo Camp 4720m – Summit Uhuru Peak 5895m– Horombo Hut.3720m 6 kms up, 15 kms down.
Summit day ascent to the crater rim at Gilmans Point and then Uhuru peak itself, and a descent to Horombo Hut which is on the Marangu route.
Day 8 :
Horombo Hut 3720m - Marangu Gate 1830m. 20 kms.
A long day descending back to the forest and all the way down to the gate on the path. From Marangu, the drive back to Moshi (1387m) is only half an hour.
Day 9 :
Transfer from Moshi hotel to Kilimanjaro airport JRO. Fly back home/OR join our safari national park
